The Social Action Club is collecting coats for the Stampeder's coat drive. Boxes are available in each homeroom. All sizes welcome. Gently used clean coats please. Coats will be picked up November 1st.

Parent Teacher Student Conferences are being held Thursday, October 30th. Times are 2:30-5:00 pm and then after a short break, 6:00-8:00 pm. Conferences will be held in the library on a first come first served basis.

Hawks Sports Update

The weather played havoc on the girl's soccer schedule and they had to end the season prematurely.  They were slated to play in a 4 team final to determine the winner of the school season but snow and ice and wind and grey days in general shut it all down.  If improvement, hard work, sportsmanship, and fun are measures of success then the Hawk's girl's soccer team had a very successful season. Thanks to the coaches for volunteering their time and fielding such an exciting side.

Hawk's Girls Soccer Game Cancelled

Just a quick post for those who were making plans to either get the players to Nickel or coming out to cheer them on.  Due to weather and field conditions, the game has been cancelled.  Stay tuned for possible make up dates.

Two in a Row For the Hawk's Girls Soccer Team

Another beautiful fall afternoon brought the Hawk's another win on the soccer pitch yesterday.  Beating the  David Thompson Tiger's 2-0 in a fabulous defensive effort, the girls improved their win record to three on the regular season. The Hawk's took full advantage of a 'sub-less' Tiger's bench and never let up pressure, pushing their tired opponents to the final minute.

Hawk's Girls Soccer Win Big Against Longhorns

The Hawk's girls soccer team pulled out a great win on Monday afternoon beating John Ware on a beautiful warm fall afternoon.  They won 5-0 exhibiting great communication, solid team play, good central field possession, and a stellar defensive effort highlighted by Kerena's shutout performance.

Come out this afternoon (a sunny 10 °C) and watch the girls play their last regular game of the season vs. David Thompson at 4:15 on the Wilma pitch.

"Good Canadian Kids"

Don Cherry would have been proud of our girls soccer team yesterday.  Braving the subzero temperatures, the snow, the frozen ground and a soccer ball that must have felt more like a bowling ball, the team never let up and actually appeared to be enjoying themselves immensely.  They faced a very strong Fairview team with an excellent first half where much of the play was in the Fairview third.  Unfortunately the half-time whistle saw the Hawks down 1-0 and they never fully recovered the drive they showed in the first half.  Outstanding defensive play by Brittany and some great chances offensively were not quite enough to bring the game to the Hawk's favour.  Come out to see the girls next game on Monday October 15 at 4:15 in Wilma's back yard.

Boys Soccer: Hawks vs Nickel

The boys soccer team had a tough loss last week to the very strong Nickle team.  Just like the girls, the boys met a solid defense and exceptional middle field in the Nickle team.  Some very hard work and great tenacity was shown by the boys to take two goals on the game but it wasn't enough to overcome the steady offensive pressure of the Nickle side.

Tough Loss For Hawks Girls Soccer

On a beautiful afternoon on the Wilma pitch; the Hawks had a tough time with a very strong Nickle team. Nickle scored early and ended up with 5 in the first half.  The frustrated but competitive Hawks team stayed with it and continued playing hard.  Struggling a bit in mid-field, the Hawks were still able to win through the middle third a few times. Then they faced a towering defense that simply made no errors.When the mids did break through the strong backs and were able to forward the ball to the strikers, the Nickle keeper was focused and strong denying all shots.

Nickle had a number of club players and a very strong center field presence.  The star of the game was clearly a high level player who took full advantage of the Hawk's relative inexperience.  A natural libero, she looked like a female version of Beckenbauer.  All that being said, the second half showed a great display of grittiness and determination in the Hawk's play.  I'm sure their coaches were proud of the hard work and never-give-up attitude on display. There were many small field victories to be proud of.

On a side note, Nickle had large (and loud) support from parents and friends, at least 40 supporters accompanied their team on the road trip.  If you can make it out to watch our girls play, I know it would mean a lot to them.  Hopefully we'll see you on the sidelines at Willow Park School (near Southcenter Mall) next Wednesday October 3rd at 4:15.

Hawks Soccer: A Strong First Game Win 3-1

I had the privilege of watching the Hansen Hawks Girls Soccer team play their first game of the season on Monday.  The game was fast paced and aggressive with some wide open play.  First game - first win of the season for the team, with a firm 3 -1 finish.  The opening goal came from Nicole on a beautiful cross after a great effort starting in the defensive end. The second goal came from a strong direct free kick by Brittney from about 25 meters.  The third goal put away the rival SWS Storm and came from Mackenzie's great anticipation of a poorly placed goal kick.  A solid showing by 2nd year keeper Karena who only let one shot sneak by her.

Overall an excellent effort led by coaches Ms. Aucoin, Ms. Speerin, and Ms. Bramall the team showed some very positive play that they can build on and I'm looking forward to the next game. Come support your Hawks on Monday September 24th at 4:15 on Wilma's pitch when they take on Nickel. Keep an eye on the calendar at the bottom of the blog for upcoming games.
