- Parent/teacher interviews are coming up, no appointments necessary. They will be held in the gym, simply find the teacher you wish to speak with and step up to the desk. The interviews will be on March 20th after noon dismissal from 1-4pm then again at 5-8pm and on March 21 from 9-12 am.

- Spring break begins at noon on the 20th and classes resume March 31st.

We have included a complete summary of the meeting, including some background information and a summary from CAPSC executive members.  Full details of member's comments, concerns and questions are also included.  Please read over the article and be sure to contact us directly with further comments and questions you have.  We will use the information to formulate our response and discussion with the CBE regarding the changes being made.

Thank you for your continued support!

Upcoming Meeting - AGM

Wednesday February 26th we will be hosting our regular meeting as well as our annual general meeting.
Our regular meeting will take place from 7:00-8:00pm, with our AGM to follow starting at 8:00pm.  We will be hosting both meetings at AE Cross school (3445 37th St SW) in the library.
Our regular member meeting will focus on fundraising ideas for the sustainability of CAPSC.  This meeting is open to the public.
The AGM that follows is also open to the public, however you must have a valid CAPSC membership to vote in the election or to run for a position (membership deadline is January 31st).  The CAPSC executive is looking for a few dynamic individuals to join us for the upcoming year and we'd love to hear from you. Please contact us if you have questions regarding positions or how you can contribute.  Commitment can be as much or as little as you'd like. We really do need parents and community members just like YOU!

Meet A Trustee Candidate

In 26 days municipal elections will be held in Calgary. We will be voting for a Mayor, 14 Councillors, 7 Public School Trustees and 7 Separate School Trustees - are you ready? Don't let the voting booth be the first place you see their names.

Since this is a school related blog, this post will be about the Public School Trustees in our area. There are seven trustees on the board, each representing two wards. Wilma Hansen is in Ward 14. Our present, long time trustee Carol Bazinet has announced her retirement from the board.

There are three declared candidates for Wards 12/14. They (and their websites) are:

The Council and Parent Association will be meeting on Wednesday, October 16 at 7pm in the library. One of the candidates, Christina Steed, has asked to chat with us during the first part of our meeting. Plan on coming out and listening to Christina and asking her some questions about her candidacy.

Find out about all the candidates in our ward by reading their websites and sending them questions. The CBE Board of Trustees makes decisions daily that directly affect our children's education so your participation in this process couldn't be more important.

Band Bingo - Volunteers Urgently Needed

THIS IS URGENT

Hello Band Parents

If the band program does not provide the required 13 volunteers, the band program will not receive the funds AND the Wilma Hansen School Parents Association will be fined AND the bingo license will be put in jeopardy for future bingos.

PLEASE check your calendar and let us know if you are able to volunteer.

Our next Bingo is the afternoon of SUNDAY, APRIL 28 from 10:30am to 3:30pm.

The location is the BINGO BARN, 1107 33 Street NE

This Bingo is specifically for the band program at Wilma.  That means that if the band program provides the parent volunteers, all funds received from this event will go directly to the band program.  As always, you will receive the usual 30point (1point = $1) credit voucher as well.  This voucher can be applied to your school fees in September as well as other expenses that come up in the school year.

For this Bingo, we are requesting 13 volunteers. If you are able to volunteer for this event, please respond to this email.   So, check your calendars and respond asap!  (nstaples@shaw.ca)

If you are available for this date, please let me know.

Thanks
Nancy Staples

The Future or Our Parent Association

As part of the agenda at our last Parent Association meeting, Chairperson Lynn expressed her concern for succession planning for the Association.  Since she won't have children enrolled at Wilma Hansen School, she can no longer sit as Chair in September.  This position, along with Secretary, Vice Chair, and Treasurer needs to be filled.

The Parent Association at Wilma (as at many other schools) is a money manager.  Through volunteer effort, we raise funds at Casinos, Bingos, and other fundraisers like the magazine subscription drive.  As a democratic body representative of each parent in the school and in conjunction with school administration, we create a yearly budget with those funds. The budget is used to fund or subsidize various programs at the school that enrich our student's educational experience.  Without this extra money, parents would be paying more for some programs and some things would need to be dropped altogether. A sampling of the PA contributions:

  • Apple ipads for classroom use - $8,000
  • Quick Draw Animation Society ( Artist is Residence) – Spring 2013 - $10,000
  • Equipment for New Design Suite - $10,000
  • Author visit – David Poulson – Last Sam’s Cage - $600
  • Pro Tech Breakaway rims for basketball - $600
  • Pads for volleyball standards - $1150
  • Volleyball uniforms - $3120
  • SMART document camera - $900
  • Set of GPS devices - $900
  • Stoves for Outdoor Ed option - $900
  • Academy of Reading literacy software - $5650
  • Explorer Idol: Gr 7 musical theatre program - $685
  • Bussing for field trips (Calaway Park, Leisure Centre, Drumheller)  - $6800
  • Awards and student recognition - $4000
  • SALTS subsidy

If we don't fill these executive positions, we can't have a Parent Association, without which there will be no casino or bingos - the primary sources of this money.

If you feel you can help and want to step up, now is a great time to learn about the roles we need to fill. No experience is necessary, there will be people around to help, and there are many guides on how to run a meeting and the PA.  Here is a link to our by-laws, these are the primary guide for the Association.  If you want to help or have questions, please let us know.  You can reach Lynn at jewittj@telus.net or myself at scampsall@gmail.com if you want to know more.
